# In his book Combat Handgunnery (2002 version), he claims
# that in defensive use and if you compare them to all modern
# revolvers, the autos (1911s) are at least slightly more likely to
# malfunction. The auto (1911) requires maintenance, particularly
# lubrication. And the auto's (1911) magazine springs can take
# a set after being kept loaded for too long.
# Thus,
#
# Few of us would want to stake our lives on the functionality of a 1911
# pistol whose magazine spring had been FULLY COMPRESSED
# since before World War I. (Funny applause????)
#
# So, all you old-timers that got old 1911 pistol from the Korean
# war and before better give your magazine springs a rest!.
#
# I am happier owning my HK USP45 (that is cocked and locked or DA),
# then thinking about buying some other old 1911.
#

I would think people would be more worried that the ammo that old would
misfire. I have some ammo that I loaded over 30 years ago that I sometimes
shoot and it is fine, but I would not carry any that old for protection.

Only problems that I can remember is a 25 cal auto that I had under the
floor mat of a car for several years. About half of the ammo in the
magazine miss fired. It was not the gun as I had about half of a box of
ammo that was in the house that was the same box as the ammo in the gun.
It all fired fine. Just too much oil sprayed on the gun over about 2 or 3
years I guess.
